As the prevalence and severity of mental illness is increasing among Hong Kong students, promoting students’ mental health becomes a critical component of improving school climate, safety, and learning. Therefore, our school invited Ms. LI Wing-yan, Michelle, the Educational Psychologist, to hold a thematic talk and workshop on the “Teacher’s Role in Promoting Student’s Mental Health” and “Crisis Management Training” for us on the First Staff Development Day.
In the thematic talk, Ms. LI shared her extensive experience in dealing with students with mental problems and disorders. She explained the techniques and support needed to identify students early on with or at risk of, mental illness.
During the workshops, she provided our school teachers and staff with best practices for dealing with teen suicide and other school crises related to mental health. Teachers also rehearsed responding to the crisis plan by developing simulated scenarios to use as a drill.
Teachers were attentive and eagerly participated in the group discussions. Their thorough participation made the day a precious and fruitful one.
