Six students from the Social Service Group worked as volunteers for the “Nasopharynx Cancer Research Project” conducted by the Faculty of Medicine, the Chinese University of Hong Kong. This research aims to identify asymptomatic patients with early NPC by analyzing the cancer-derived DNA in blood plasma. Prior to the service, student helpers attended a training session to familiarize them with the background of the study and to teach them about their roles. They then assisted in the smooth running of the blood screening test by keeping order in the stream of people, checking survey forms and responding to questions raised by participants. Students found this social service experience unique and fruitful, and they also gained insight into chemical pathology.
