On 7th May, 2024, S5 Biology students conducted a full-day field study at the Ho Koon Nature Education cum Astronomical Centre. In the morning, they had the opportunity to study the living organisms in the fresh water stream. All students were fascinated by the highly diversified small animals living in the river. During the study, they found organisms such as bee shrimps, mayfly nymph and mosquitofish etc. and had the chance to study them closely, learning more about how they adapt to the river environment.
In the afternoon, students study the river water sample by the microscopes and various equipment to find the biomass and abiotic factors, such as dissolved oxygen level and pH, in the river water.
This eye-opening experience allowed our students to understand the roles of various organisms and the importance of the river and thus have more respect to the biodiversity on earth.
