Gifted Education Fund: Off-school Advanced Learning Programme “Quantum Computing for Gifted Students”
Fully funded by the Gifted Education Fund, Education Bureau and organized by the HKUST Department of Physics with support from the Hong Kong Academy for Gifted Education, “Quantum Computing for Gifted Students” aimed to equip gifted students with the essential concepts of quantum physics and quantum computing, with hands-on experience in operating the real quantum computers.
6C NG Pui-hei was one of the 40 participants admitted to the course after selections and interviews. Under faculty members’ supervision, he attended lectures on physics theories and algorithms, practiced coding and carried out research from July 2023 to January 2024. Upon completion of the 7-month programme, Duncan and his groupmates made a presentation titled “Solving combinatorial optimization using *QAOA” in a conference to showcase their research results and key insights.
*QAOA is one of the most useful quantum algorithms, leveraging quantum mechanics with the assistance of classical optimizers, to solve problems beyond the scope of capabilities of classical computers and algorithms.
